Looking into Hong Kong through argumentation, portrait, and poetry

About These Works

Here collects three writings that examine the elements of Hong Kong through different writing genres, including an argumentative essay, a portrait, and a series of poems. Each piece varies in voice and the amount of fictional and nonfictional elements. The portrait of Hong Kong is a Creative Nonfiction in which I explore the many conflicting facets of Hong Kong as well as my internal conflict. In the portrait, you will find narrations of my coming-of-age stories in relation to this place as well as the general ideals of this financial city. Through the argumentative essay, I look critically into the living environment of one important group in Hong Kong, foreign domestic helpers from Indonesia and Philippines. Then, I look the topic and remediated it to a form of poetry, highlighting their emotional journey.

"if you come on a Sunday, the park, including the sports ground, has transformed to an area of picnic by many foreign domestic helpers coming from other parts of the world, namely from Indonesia, Philippine, and Sri Lanka. Their laughter fills the area.

Argumentation: One Roof Two Voices

Portrait: Hello Again

Poetry: Remediating One Roof Two Voices

"Mr. and Mrs. treated me well

But I hear stories of others that made my stomach swirled"

"I could never lay my finger upon the moment it started, nor the moment it ended. I blame it on both Hong Kong’s ever-changing personality and my indecisive nature in this relationship..."
